Liquors

History of liquor

Around 1600 Dutch trade travellers brought herbs, spices and sugar to the most important Dutch harbour Amsterdam. Amsterdam was the distributor of whole Europe. The monks in Amsterdam started experimenting with the new products, on their never ending search for medicines. They made tinctures and elixirs which tasted rather bitter. Adding sugar was the reason these drinks became popular and further on they where developed by commerce. That’s how liquors were born.

Liqours in Amsterdam

Amsterdam knew a lot of distilleries, which were famous all over the world. Their names still tickle our imagination, such as Forget Me Not, Prick In The Prune, Oil Of Venus.
‘A.van Wees distillery de Ooievaar’ kept on making these liquors.
